Catalpa speciosa

Northern Catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) – 18" Starter Tree A fast-growing native tree known for its enormous heart-shaped leaves, showy clusters of white flowers, and distinctive long seed pods. Northern Catalpa can develop into a substantial shade tree and is a great choice for larger yards, farms, wildlife plantings, and naturalized areas. Its spring flowers attract pollinators, and Catalpa is the host plant for the catalpa sphinx moth—the caterpillar commonly known as the catalpa worm. These are approximately 18-inch starter trees grown in trade pots by Base Camp North. Because these are live plants, size and appearance will naturally vary from tree to tree.

Growing notes

Northern Catalpa is a fast-growing deciduous tree that develops best with plenty of room and sunlight. It tolerates a wide variety of soils and urban conditions once established. Mature trees produce large leaves, showy white flowers, and long bean-like seed pods.

Planting or germination instructions

Plant at the same depth the tree is currently growing in its container. Dig a hole wider than the root ball, loosen surrounding soil, and backfill with the native soil. Water thoroughly after planting. Keep the root zone consistently moist during the first growing season while the tree establishes. A 2–3 inch layer of mulch can help conserve moisture, but keep mulch several inches away from the trunk. Select a permanent location with adequate room for a large mature tree.

American Cranberrybush is well suited for wildlife hedgerows, natural screens, habitat plantings, and restoration projects. Its dense branching structure offers excellent cover for birds, while its seasonal flowers, fruit, and fall foliage provide multi-season interest in the landscape. Once established, this shrub tolerates a wide range of soils and moisture conditions and can grow in full sun to partial shade.
