Growing notes

Black Gum is a relatively slow-growing but long-lived native tree. It develops a strong taproot when young, so seedlings benefit from deep containers or being planted into their permanent location while relatively small. Trees tolerate a range of conditions but generally perform best in acidic, moist, well-drained soils. Once established, Black Gum can become an outstanding wildlife and landscape tree.

Planting or germination instructions

Black Gum seeds have dormancy and generally require cold, moist stratification before germination. Place seeds in a slightly moist medium and refrigerate for approximately 60–90 days. After stratification, sow approximately 1/2 inch deep in a well-drained growing medium and keep consistently moist. Seeds can also be fall-sown outdoors in a protected container or seed bed and allowed to experience natural winter temperatures. Germination can be irregular, so allow additional time for seeds that do not emerge immediately.
