Black Chokeberry is an extremely adaptable shrub that performs well in full sun or partial shade. It tolerates drought once established while also thriving in moist soils, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens and habitat restoration. Plants produce their best berry crops in full sun.
Black Chokeberry seeds require cold, moist stratification before germination. Clean all remaining fruit pulp from the seeds. Mix seeds with slightly moist peat moss, vermiculite, or sand. Refrigerate for 60–90 days at 34–40°F. Sow approximately ¼ inch deep in spring. Keep the soil evenly moist until germination. Some seeds may naturally germinate over multiple seasons.
