Honey Locust Tree – 18-inch Starter Tree

Gleditsia triacanthos

Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) – 18" Starter Tree A fast-growing native tree with an open canopy, attractive compound leaves, and distinctive long seed pods. Honey Locust is a tough and adaptable tree that works well for larger properties, wildlife plantings, habitat projects, farms, and naturalized areas. The flowers provide resources for pollinators, while the large pods and seeds are eaten by wildlife. Its relatively light canopy also allows more sunlight to reach plants growing beneath mature trees than many dense-canopied shade trees. These are approximately 18-inch starter trees grown in trade pots by Base Camp North. $12 per tree. Live plants naturally vary in height, branching, and appearance.

Growing notes

Honey Locust is a fast-growing, adaptable native tree that performs best in full sun. It tolerates a wide range of soils and becomes drought tolerant once established. Give trees plenty of permanent growing space.

Planting or germination instructions

Plant at approximately the same depth the tree is growing in its container. Dig a hole wider than the root ball, loosen surrounding soil, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly after planting and maintain consistent moisture during the first growing season while the root system becomes established. Mulch can help retain moisture, but keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk. Select a location with plenty of sunlight and sufficient room for a large mature tree.
