Swamp Chestnut Oak Acorns (Quercus michauxii)

Quercus michauxii

Grow Swamp Chestnut Oak (Quercus michauxii), a large native oak of moist bottomlands and low woods. Its broad, chestnut-like leaves form a substantial shade tree, while its large acorns provide valuable seasonal food for deer, squirrels, wild turkey, and other wildlife. Swamp Chestnut Oak is also known as basket oak or cow oak. It is a strong choice for wildlife plantings, restoration projects, large food-forest sites, and spacious native landscapes with moist, well-drained soil. Seed Details: - Fresh 2026 acorns - Untreated - Sold for propagation - Seasonal, limited-availability item - Acorns may begin root development soon after harvest Fresh white-oak-group acorns are sensitive to drying and should be planted promptly. Seed-grown trees naturally vary, and germination percentage and timing are not guaranteed.

Small-batch seed lots are gathered, cleaned, processed, and packed by Josh at Base Camp North with help from a few friends in Pennsylvania.

Growing notes

Swamp Chestnut Oak prefers full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. It naturally occurs in fertile bottomlands, stream terraces, and low woods. Give this long-lived tree ample room to develop its broad crown. The species is in the white oak group. Fresh acorns have little or no natural dormancy and may begin producing a root soon after they fall.

Planting or germination instructions

Plant fresh acorns promptly in a moist, well-drained growing medium and cover them with a light layer of soil or leaf litter. Keep the medium evenly moist but not waterlogged, and do not allow the acorns to dry out. Protect planted acorns from squirrels, mice, and other rodents. A root may develop before the shoot appears; normal shoot growth can follow when temperatures warm. Germination timing varies, so allow time before discarding an acorn that appears sound.

Shipping notes

Fresh acorns are seasonal and are packed to help retain moisture. Plant promptly after arrival and do not allow them to dry out.

Black Huckleberry is a low-growing woodland shrub with dark berries valued by wildlife. Black Chokeberry produces dark fruit and strong fall color, while Red Elderberry provides flowers and clusters of fruit that attract birds and other wildlife. This collection is ideal for people building a food forest, edible native landscape, wildlife garden, hedgerow, or woodland-edge planting. Each species is packaged and labeled separately.
