Rhus aromatica
Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica) is a hardy native shrub valued for wildlife habitat, brilliant fall color, and its ability to grow in challenging sites. Its dense branching provides excellent cover, while clusters of red fruit provide food for birds and other wildlife. The foliage turns shades of red, orange, burgundy, and purple in fall. When crushed, the leaves and stems have a distinctive citrus-like fragrance that gives the plant its common name. Fragrant Sumac is an excellent choice for native landscapes, wildlife plantings, slopes, woodland edges, naturalized areas, and erosion-control projects. Once established, it is tolerant of dry conditions and relatively poor soils. Each seed pack contains approximately 25 seeds, collected and processed in small batches by Base Camp North.

Hardy, adaptable native shrub that develops a spreading growth habit and can form colonies over time. Fragrant Sumac performs well in sunny to partly shaded locations and is particularly useful on dry slopes, woodland edges, and other difficult planting sites. Its dense growth provides wildlife cover and its red fruits are an important seasonal wildlife food source.
Fragrant Sumac seeds have a hard seed coat and natural dormancy. For best results, scarify the seeds to help moisture penetrate the seed coat, followed by a period of cold, moist stratification. After pretreatment, sow approximately 1/4 inch deep in a moist, well-draining growing medium. Keep evenly moist but not waterlogged. Seeds may also be fall-sown outdoors and allowed to experience natural winter conditions. Germination can be irregular, so allow additional time before discarding ungerminated seed.
