Gaylussacia baccata
Black Huckleberry (Gaylussacia baccata) is a native woodland shrub of eastern North America valued for its dark edible berries, wildlife habitat, and ability to thrive in acidic woodland soils. This low-growing native shrub produces small bell-shaped flowers followed by dark blue-black to black berries in summer. The fruit is eaten by numerous birds and mammals, making Black Huckleberry an excellent addition to wildlife gardens, woodland edges, naturalized areas, and native plantings. Seeds are collected from naturally growing plants in northeastern Pennsylvania and cleaned by Base Camp North. Black Huckleberry can be slow to establish from seed. Germination may be irregular, and patience is recommended. It performs best in acidic, well-drained soil with conditions similar to those found in its natural woodland habitat. Seed-grown plants will have natural genetic variation and may differ from the parent plants.

Best suited to acidic, well-drained soils. Black Huckleberry naturally occurs in dry to moderately moist woods, forest edges, and other acidic habitats. Once established, plants can spread gradually by underground rhizomes and form small colonies. Avoid heavily amended or alkaline soils.
For best results, sow seeds outdoors in fall and allow them to experience natural winter conditions. Seeds may also be cold-moist stratified before spring sowing. Sow shallowly in an acidic, well-drained seed-starting medium and keep consistently moist but not waterlogged. Do not bury seeds deeply. Germination can be slow and irregular, and some seeds may require an extended period before germinating. Growing native shrubs from seed requires patience; germination percentages and timing can vary.
